Elsie Riley

Elsie has over 18 years experience of fundraising for a wide variety of charities with a particular focus on small charities and start up fundraising roles. She loves the creativity and challenge that comes from developing organizational fundraising from the beginning and finds it very rewarding to be part of a team that enables charities to grow and develop providing vital support for our communities.

Her past roles have included developing Public Fundraising from scratch as Regional Fundraising Manager at Camphill Blair Drummond, and leading the first fundraising strategy for Scotland at Crisis as the first ever Fundraising Manager for Scotland.

Elsie is Head of Development at Scottish Mountain Rescue, a representative body for 26 Mountain Rescue Teams. When she started the role seven years ago she created and implemented the first ever fundraising strategy. Elsie supported the trustees from their first tentative steps into the fundraising world, to a successful fundraising programme covering a range of income streams that they have today. This has delivered considerable organizational growth, ultimately providing significantly greater resources and support for the 850 Mountain Rescue volunteers who drop everything at a moment’s notice to save lives.

Favourite Leadership Quote

“The true measure of leadership is not how much you can control, but how much you empower others”
- Adam Grant

I am extremely passionate about effective fundraising for small charities and particularly helping charities who might be interested in developing fundraising for the first time. The resources and sector knowledge required to make fundraising successful aren’t always easily accessible for these charities and yet they comprise 96% of the voluntary sector. I’m very excited to join the Elischer Foundation Mentoring programme, and I hope that this will help me to be more effective in working with these vital charities in my current and future roles and to help to bridge this gap. I’m looking forward to drawing on the experience of others, and the opportunities for learning and collaboration in order to develop my leadership and influencing skills.
